Europe 2018 - July 8 - Mannheim to Nierstein

Sunday - July 8
It turned out to be a long night for Lori as post-soccer game noise kept her awake until 1 am. Our room faced the courtyard and was very quiet, just luck of the draw.
We wanted to check out the Wasserturn, historic water tower and park, on our way out of town.

Markus came over while we were taking pictures to invite us to join their demonstration ride to Heidleberg. They were advocating for a faster bike route.
Unfortunately, Heidelberg was not on our route for the day as they seemed like a fun group.
We did chat for quite awhile, comparing notes on how to promote bike routes.
We might have considered staying another day but we need to get Megan to the airport in Frankfurt for her flight home in 3 days.

We crossed back to the west side of the river at Worms.
Little did we know it was such an big year for this church where Martin Luther was declared an heretic in 1521.
There was a space in the church that was a museum but had everything in German so was bit difficult for us.
A very creative way to create their own shade!
Detour....looks like it will be a little farther than we thought.
Having a smart phone with maps that can tell you where you are has been really helpful with the number of detours that we've experienced in the past week.
We were about 5 miles south of Nierstein when we saw all these bikes parked next a little restaurant and figured it would be a good place to get some afternoon refreshments.
Plus it was very shady! We ran into some more construction enroute to the hotel. Dinner found us at a Portuguese and Spanish tapas restaurant with an excellent host who was also very funny. It also gave Megan an opportunity to practice her Portuguese skills.
Once more we did not get back from dinner until 9 pm as it was such a pleasant evening for walking and talking, another reason that this blog is being worked on 2 years later.
