Friday - July 13 The church bells started ringing at 6:00 after a very quiet night. Doug did his best to ignore them and no hearing aids in his ears helped! |
Donna explored the restroom's art. |
It included these two pictures of the campground during a flood event. Wow...that is a LOT of water! |
It was a very quiet morning and we were probably the first ones to leave the campground. |
Downtown was quite a bit more lively and the local bakery was a fine place for breakfast #2 to supplement breakfast #1 which consisted of yogurt and a croissant. |
Not sure what kind of hardwood that is but those are very straight logs and a log truck was not something we expected to see this morning. |
It took us awhile to get out of town as the road crossed the railroad tracks and 5 trains passed before the we could continue on our way. |
We did expect to see lots of vineyards..... |
and barges.... (Mouse Tower in the background, restored in the 968) |
and CASTLES! (the 7th C) This is the Ehrenfels Castle which served as hiding place for the treasures of the Mainz Cathedral during the wars of the 15th century. |
Rheinstein Castle (#2) |
#4 - Sooneck Castle, built in 1010 |
#5 - Furstenberg Castle |
#7 - Pfalzgrafenstein Castle, a former customs tower from the 14th century. |
Lunch at Benno's Truck Stop in Kaub. The meal was huge...we should have shared! That is Gutenfels Castle (#8) on the horizon. |
Church of Our Lady in Oberwesel. |
St. Martin's Church on the right and the remains of the old city wall in Oberwesel to the left. Not quite castles but still very impressive architecture. |
Being on this side of the Rhine gave us a chance to see this statue of Loreley up close as we had only seen her from afar before. |
Katz Castle (#9) above St. Goarshausen |
Barrel Cabins! |
Headed back to the west side to spend the night in Boppard. |
Our kind of place! |
The view from our table at dinner. |
Then we wandered around town since we have only passed through before. |
What a day......the Middle Rhine is pretty hard to beat when it comes to bike touring along a river. |
