Europe 2018 - July 20 - Diest to Mechelen

Friday - July 20
Cor was our host for the night. He is a biker too so we had a lot to talk about.
We enjoyed his company so much that we were reluctant to say goodby.
We think he enjoyed our company too but the road was calling.
On our way out of Diest
A roadside chapel about 6 miles outside of town (between knooppunt 93 and 94 on the bike route we were following)

Almost lunch time but it will be another 45 minutes until we find a sandwich shop in Werchter.
Random trailside beer?
We heard ice cream calling as we passed through Bonheider.
The local ice cream shop makes their own delicious ice cream on site.
They also had a sense of humor!
The canal that we had been following brought us into Mechelen about an hour later. We did have to make our way through some new construction along the way. They are creating more public spaces along the waterfront similar to this one.
We heard the bridge alarm bells go off from our hotel room and wondered what was happening. It turned out that they were drawbridges.
Fortunately, the alarms did not ring after dark.
We ate Italian and wandered in Belgium for the evening. Peter Sagan won stage 13 by a wheel and we found out that Donna's favorite, Mark Cavendish, had timed out on Stage 11 of the Tour de France. It was a very international evening!
