July 31 - Into Berlin - Big and Bold (and slightly overwhelming)

Friday - Hennigsdorf to Berlin
We had breakfast at a local bakery which was one quarter the price the motel was charging. Usually the hotel breakfast is included in the price but not this one.
The mailman
Crossing the Spandauer River
The route mostly took us on paths along canals so we moved along pretty smoothly for being in a metropolis of 3.4 million people.
These are the garden plots for city dwellers.
Switchbacks for bikes
It was a little tricky at the bottom however. Guess they didn't want us to just bomb out into the street at the end.
A bunch of similarly clad young people were throwing their kayaks in the water as we came by so we stopped to watch.
They are playing canoe polo, an obscure sport according the young lady that explained it to us. Looked like fun.
Just a little garden cottage. The garden plots covered at least a mile along the canal.
Larry Robin - this one is for you. Guess the mast was hindering his progress on the canal.
A little diner called the Bistro Denli. She took good care of us despite some language barriers.
The meal was huge.......we may not need dinner tonight!

The River Spree
Into the Tiergarten and tourist central
The Angel of Victory

The end of the official route from Copenhagen - The Brandenburg Gate or Brandenburg Tor as it is called here.

They were setting up for the regular Friday night summer concert.

Bike taxi driver just sprucing up while she waits for a fare.
Yep....a bike taxi that customers help pedal.
We chatted with Zorro for quite awhile. He had just come from Amsterdam where the rainy, cool weather had dampened business. It is promising to be a lot sunnier the next few days. His website is www.ZorroforPeace.com. He took our picture too when he heard about our trip. He would not, however, tell us his home port being he is Zorro.
The Ritz Carlton - we aren't staying here.
When we came to Potsdamer Platz there was a huge mall type building with Sony in big letters. This area used to be the commercial center of the city. The Berlin Wall went right through the middle and what hadn't been bombed at the end of WWII was destroyed in the process.
It is big, gleaming and modern and back to being a thriving commercial district.
Donna had lost the eyepiece to her camera very early in the trip and we figured if it could be replaced, this would be the place. They did have one in stock and also put a screen protector on the back screen. This was a really good idea with all the movement in and out of our handlebar bags. Doug got one too, after he saw Donna's.

The lady's card caught Donna's eye and she bought 3 of them.
Then Doug decided that he really liked her "Lip portraits" On goes the red lipstick....
...........then you kiss the paper.
She is going to mail the picture to us in September.
He was making pretty good music using frying pans and 5 gallon plastic buckets.
Our first encounter with the Berlin Wall.
Love locks again! Not on a bridge this time but on a remnant of the Wall.
Two very, friendly bicycle police that talked to us while we waited for a light to change.
You can take rides in that hot air balloon....we didn't.
but we observed it a lot over the next couple of days.
The view from our Air BnB apartment on the 7th floor.
Olga showed us how to us the washing machine before she left us on our own. That was a good thing because, of course, this one is different than the ones in Denmark.
She even had a drying rack for us to use.
Berlin is ready for us and, thanks to Ivo and Katie, we think we might be ready for it.
