August 1 - The Berlin Wall is History That We Remember

Saturday - to Alexanderplatz and Back
The morning light looks better on the brick of this historic train station. There is a S Bahn station, the modern equivalent, not far away.

Our apartment is just behind the top of the tree about in the middle.
One World Bear seen on our walk up Stresemannstrasse.
Donna is standing in front of the Martin-Gropius Museum.

This is right next door on the grounds of the former SS and Gestapo headquarters building.
Another part of the Berlin Wall flanks the exhibits of the Topography of Terrors.
The exhibits are very well done and very sobering.

It was a tragedy for everyone on both sides.
Similar markings run through the city marking the route of the Wall. It split the heart and soul of the city.
On the lighter side, these pretezels were delicious and got us to lunch.
Johnny's was a nice respite from the crowds outside.
Checkpoint Charlie and McDonald's......somehow an appropriate combination.
Crossing the River Spree again with the Berliner Church dome in the background.
St. Mary's Church and the TV Tower at Alexanderplatz.

To raise money for on-going restoration you can buy a glass tile to place on this mosaic. We bought a blue sky piece which we placed on the left panel.
A rolling beer bar like we've seen in Portland.
He is not the first one to use this foothold for climbing.
This is a National Geographic photography exhibit providing cover for some more construction. Berlin is still a city under reconstruction.
One of our all-time favorites.
Hold that pose!

Bubbles seemed like the best way to end this day which had started out so seriously.
Berlin, 700 year old city, the site of so much tragedy, so much beauty and looking forward to a promising future.
