August 8 - We get to be Angels of the Road

Saturday - Wolsztyn to Leszno
After all the festivities last night it was a very quiet morning. In fact, we were the only ones at breakfast at 0700.
It is already 75F and we are just getting started.
We stopped because it was so colorful then realized that there were a lot of people in the cemetery cleaning headstones and placing fresh flowers. We observed this same activity a little later in another town. Maybe it happens every Saturday morning?
These little guys were next to a bike path we were taking out of town.

Wish I had room to take one of these on my bike (Donna)
We've seen quite a few storks but this one was close to the road (the village of Mochy). He spread his wings just as we looked away.
Hey...we thought we were in Poland!
Church in Brenno

That long white line is all greenhouses.
Stopped to get some ice cream in Wtoszakowice. Just as we parked our bikes this young guy pulled up with 2 low tires and asked if we had a pump. Of course we did and Doug was more than happy to help him.
He spoke fairly good English so we talked a bit about our journey, took pictures all around, but forgot to ask his name.
In Zbarzewo

Hay baler hatching a bale.
It is hot (95F), it is humid and we are getting close to Leszno.
We really felt sorry for the guy that was holding up the wing of the glider and running along side it in this heat. A little later, Accuweather said the real feel was 103F!
The hotel was right next to the airport which specialized in gliders. We arrived before our room was ready so ate lunch. The Logistics Chief and the Chief Mechanic of our adventure had a meeting to evaluate progress to date, estimate future progress, and look at options.  In forestry terms we call this “adaptive management”. The 95-100F days are forecast to continue for at least a week. It is also proving somewhat difficult to find accommodations online in Poland, especially in the smaller towns. There aren't really any straight roads to anywhere and so distances are adding up. The Topography of Terrors in Berlin pretty well saturated us for Holocaust/WWII heaviness. The bottom line is that today we decided to skip Krakow and Auschwitz and head south for the Czech Republic instead. This will also give us a bit more flexibility in our schedule.
We completed our day and week with Mass at the Church of St. Joseph which was about 2 miles from the motel. It is always interesting to hear a Mass said in a different language. They also celebrated a baptism at this one which made it extra-special. Donna especially appreciated that the congregation sang the hymns quite heartily.

Hi again, wrote you that short email today before reading this page. A whole week more of that weather, that's discouraging. Hope the best wave is less where you end up. I saw a quick blurb yesterday on the weather channel that said that some Polish river was lower than it had been for 300 years, and archeologists were taking advantage and finding stuff unseen for ages.
Cheers
