2017 MinnWisMi - Hill City to Aitkin

Tuesday - September 12 = Hill City to Aitkin
It was a cool, calm morning as we headed south. The Moose River (still starts with an "M"!) is the first time we've seen mention of moose even though all this watery country we've been riding through seems ideal moose habitat.
The Soo Line Trail (north route) runs 148 miles between Cass Lake and Moose Lake.  This is about the midpoint. The south route adds another 105 miles!
We just had to take this picture for the grandkids. A south wind (read headwind) kicked up just before we got here.
We have reconnected with the MRT route and are hoping that the shoulder will be a little wider. It has been this narrow since Hill City, the first road we've seen like this. It has taken a lot of concentration to stay on the right side of the line.
Our lunch spot. It is right across from the turn we anticipated in the last photo. The road is gravel for 7 miles and while we were eating we watched a couple of BIG gravel trucks turn that way.
We decided to stick with the asphalt on Hwy. 169 even though the shoulder didn't improve. The drivers are really great and have been giving us plenty of room.
Mississippi River crossing #14.
No choice here....we had to take the lane. It was about 1/4 mile long but only 1 car was behind us when we exited.
This is one day that we were glad to be a little early to town and did we ever enjoy our DQ Blizzards.
