2017 MinnWisMi - Albany to Seattle and the Empire Builder

Wednesday, August 30
Albany to Seattle, Amtrak Cascades to the Empire Builder
We are getting ready to catch the 6:13 Amtrak Cascades. It is sooooo nice that Amtrak has added  bike racks to their long-distance trains so we don't have to box the bikes.
We are looking way too fashion coordinated. It was totally accidental on our part.
Willamette Falls at Oregon City

Still looking pretty murky in Portland. Big Pink isn't nearly so pink today.
This shot can never be repeated. Donna clicked this picture of the Tacoma Narrows bridge not knowing that a train was approaching. We were well past the bridge by the time the train finished obscuring our view.
Seattle train station on time, with all our gear and ready for lunch. We have four hours until we need to be back here to catch the Empire Builder.
It was play time in Occidental Square.

This museum had great displays and a nice section on the history of this part of Seattle. The Yukon Gold Rush was so compelling that even the mayor left town. This historic building is typical of those that were built after 25 square blocks of town burned down in 1889.
The park in front of the train station. As you can see, it is blue sky and sunshine. Hurray!!!
What a contrast with early August when we were touring up here with daughters Lori and Megan. It was so smoky we couldn't see the Olympic Mountains when we were crossing from Victoria to Port Angeles on the ferry.

The Empire Builder goes up Puget Sound as far as Everett before it turns east.
That is Mt. Baker in the distance behind this field of monster "marshmellows".
The sun went down about the time we reached Leavenworth. We spent a delightful dinner with David and Mary who hail from Minnesota before retiring to our roomette to sleep horizontally for on a train for the first time.We just had to figure out what to do with all our panniers and bags when seats became beds. It was tight!
