Montana to Michigan 2019 - Day 1

July 8 - Monday
Kalispell to Billings
We considered all sorts of transportation options when we were in the planning stages for this summer's bike tour. We normally like to take public transportation but the logistics just were not falling into place so we decided to drive since we would already be in Sandpoint, Idaho for our tour with Lori. To stay somewhat true to our touring nature, we plan to avoid the interstates as much as possible, eat at local restaurants and take in sights along the way. It will take us a bit longer but we think we will enjoy it a whole lot more.
The first day validated this approach as we realized we were in Lewis and Clark territory. This led us to the Headwaters of the Missouri National Historic Landmark in Three Forks. This is a monument to Sacajawea and her role in the Lewis and Clark expedition.
Across the street is the lovely Sacajawea Hotel, on the National Register of Historic Places, built in stages from 1862 to 1910.
This is the only buffalo we've seen this trip.
On to the Headwaters park. We've been watching these clouds for awhile and hope they hold off long enough.
The remains of Gallatin City and the Gallatin Hotel.
The three forks of the Missouri that come together at this spot are the Jefferson, Madison.......

...... and the Gallatin.
We did see most of what we wanted. Once it started, it rained all the way to Park City, where we stopped for dinner.
