Canada 2016 - Swift Current to Herbert

Monday - 4th of July
Happy Birthday USA!
This has to be the biggest weather vane we have ever seen. It seemed totally appropriate though since we had a 10-12 mph tailwind at the time and we know it can blow a lot harder than that.
Not going to get any water mirror pictures today. We have been cruising along at 14-15 mph without really working at it. What a difference from a couple of days ago!
The lineman is going to need a boat to work on this pole.
A frost crack sealing project put all the traffic in one lane. Kyle was working on the project but was kind enough to let us take his picture and even asked us about our journey.
The hill just east of the construction zone lasted for 1.6 miles so we think it qualifies as more than a bump.
We've reached Herbert already and it is only 11:00. The problem is the next place with any kind of  lodging/camping is just too, too far away as much as we would like to take advantage of the favorable winds.
These alpacas thought we were quite interesting.

The Lone Eagle Motel proprietor has found many interesting ways to display her flowers.

This cute little guy watched us eat lunch.
We wandered around town for awhile. A farm country bench it there ever was one!
The owner had grand plans for this place but passed away before it was finished. It doesn't quite fit into its neighborhood.
Next we visited the Herbert CPR Railroad Museum.
Railroad snowplow
Inside the boxcar. The hats are all from one man's collection. He was the local barber and would give patrons a free haircut if they gave him a cap he didn't have. The collection numbers over 3,000 hats.
Frank, who grew up in Herbert and is studying to be PE and/or English teacher, made sure that we had access to all the railroad cars and other exhibits.

The teacher's desk was a fascinating collection of teacher's manuals and textbooks, mostly from the 1930's.

Copyright on this one was 1945.

We finished up our visit with a bowl of ice cream and a fascinating, lively discussion about US and Canadian politics with museum employees Frank, Crystal and Buddy.
The motel grounds was a pleasant place to spend the rest of the afternoon...sunny and 70F with a light breeze and a train rumbling past every 15 minutes or so.
We can count this as semi-rest day #2.....a good thing since tomorrow is a long day.
