Canada 2016 - Columbia Icefield to Waterfowl Lake

Sunday - June 19
Yep...it rained almost all night but at least it didn't snow. It felt cold enough to have done so.

Our new tent did stay dry which made us happy since it weighs a pound less than our old one.

It was nice to have a dry place to eat breakfast.

Will and Caroline, from Edmonton, were doing the same thing at the same time and are headed the same direction today but plan to go farther. Then tomorrow they are going to turn around and head back north and stay here again on their way back to Jasper. Tough...and young.

Caroline really wanted to make sure her feet didn't get wet.

Sunwapta Pass (2030 meters, 6660 feet) was almost anti-climatic after yesterday since it was only a couple hundred feet higher than the campground.

It is as cold as it looks but it is also dry. We actually didn't get rained on all day.

A snow river that also looks like an avalanche path to us.

It was an exhilarating 2 mile run.

We stopped to look at the river gorge under the bridge when Donna went across to look at the sheer rock wall on the other side......

Sunshine at last!!!

Seems like we come to a fork in the road on every trip :)

We had lunch at Saskatchewan Crossing. Will and Caroline had just finished lunch so we said "See you tomorrow."

The North Saskatchewan River turns east from here with Highway 11 following it.

We will continue south on the Icefield Parkway.

The only problem was that the campground had not opened for the season, even though it looked like it was open on the Park Service website. The bear box still worked, of course, and the water was running......but the outhouses were locked.

We stayed anyway and were treated to a lovely, very quiet evening.

This is just to show you the inside of the cooking shelter. It was actually warmer outside so we didn't end up using it for anything except as a dry place to store our bikes.

We did fully utilize 2 of the the bear boxes.

It has been another special day in this special place. We are even feeling lucky that we have the campground all to ourselves. Now if it would just be a little warmer!
