Canada 2016 - Vancouver, BC to Jasper, AB

Tuesday, June 14
Yes, it is a car. We really had planned on a train all the way to Jasper but last Friday ViaRail sent us an email saying that the union planned to strike on Monday. They suggested we make alternate plans and would fully refund our ticket if we did. We took them up on their offer and rented this mini-van in Vancouver. The union issue was resolved Sunday but this worked out better because we didn't have to box the bikes and we could get on our way (the train leaves at 10:30 tonight)
And it would not have been a pleasant day for wandering around town as much as we have enjoyed Vancouver in the past. (Highway 1 and the Port Mann bridge over the Fraser River)
Stopped for lunch in Hope then headed north on Highway 5. We biked up Hwy. 1 in 2013 so we get to see new country this way.
North Thompson River and some sunshine :)
Just north of Kamloops on Highway 5 which is now a 2 lane road.....nice to be off the freeway.
We saw potential moose habitat north of Kamloops but this was the only moose that we found - our motel in Valemont.
Wednesday - June 15
We were up and early because we realized that we lose an hour on our 24 hour car rental due to changing time zones just west of Jasper.
Still a lot of clouds so we didn't get the full effect of this dramatic landscape.
Mt. Robson - tallest peak in the Canadian Rockies at 13,325 feet (3954 meters)
Mt. Waddington
Due to 2 construction zones we made the 77 miles from Valemont to Jasper with only 10 minutes to spare!
Meet 9 year old Jasper, who has just arrived in Jasper in a rental mini-van too. He has spent the past year traveling the world with his parents and 12 year old sister on their bikes. They biked Amsterdam to Barcelona in Europe, Colombia in South America, Cuba, the west coast of the US, and now are headed home to Ottawa after they do the Great Parks North route to Whitefish, Montana. They are staying here until he can celebrate his 10th birthday next week in Jasper. We had a long and lively conversation with this 9 going on 19 year old.
Checked into our AirBnb after lunch and then explored the town.
There are lots of well-done interpretive signs along the Discovery Trail.
It is not warm but it is dry.......so far.

Looks like elk are their main garden pest.
The Two Brothers Totem

The first of many laundry episodes.....
......but this one features a full coffee shop!! Liking Jasper more all the time!
