2017 MinnWisMi - Grand Haven to Allegan

Sunday - October 8 - Grand Haven to Allegan
Looking ahead at the weather and winds we decided to modify our route a little. Instead of going to South Haven we are going to angle to the southeast, only following US Bike Route 35 until we reach Holland. Notice that the flag is floppy!
The route took us along Lakeshore Drive. This is an "average" house along this stretch of the coast. Some were smaller but quite a few were bigger.
We've seen numerous coal trains on the move this trip and this must be one of their destinations.
This will be the last time we get a glimpse of Lake Michigan. That little white speck on the horizon is a wave breaking at the mouth of Pigeon Lake.

Now it is really official. We turn east from here and say goodby to Lake Michigan.
Albert Keppel Forest Preserve - the cabin is a replica of the first house built in Holland in 1847.
Just a bit more aesthetically pleasing than that church in Muskegon, don't you think!
Crossing the Macatawa River. The round symbols are meant represent the diversity of the community.

And what is Holland without a few windmills?
"We will always hear your footsteps
Edgar D. Prince
1931 - 1995
The people of Downtown Holland honor
your extraordinary vision and generosity."

Chris is adding his vision to the city today on Central Ave.. This is also where we left Route 35.
We arrived in Allegan much too early on a beautiful autumn afternoon to stay at the motel so we wandered around a little after indulging in a milkshake. The cemetery was a shady and interesting place with lots headstones from the 1800's. This was one of the most unusual ones we've seen.....he was born in 1817 but there is no other date on it.

In contrast to last night, we were almost the only ones in this motel...it was eerily quiet until a few more patrons showed up late in the evening. It felt like just a little strange way to end such a beautiful day.
