September 6 - Heading West

Sunday - Cologne to Julich
We did NOT stay in this room but it was only a few doors down the hall. We also did not see any presidents.
We just couldn't resist these sweet treats so we bought some more on our way by. Breakfast #2 is going to be yummy.
Today we leave the Rhine River route and start heading west towards Belgium.

Who knew! Just wondering if they are a AA or AAA team for St. Louis.

Right before this the road came to a T intersection with a big wall and gate and then a very tall berm. Naturally we were a little curious when this staircase showed up.
We only had one word when we got to the top - Wow!
This open pit mine looked even deeper than the one we saw in the Czech Republic.
Not sure what they were planning to use this drone for but it was interesting to watch the launch.

Just a bit of a crosswind which is why we have our rainjackets on for warmth.....was it really 100F in Poland not so long ago?
We stopped at a bus stop shelter in Hollen to eat our pretzels (lunch #1 as we are trying to beat the rain to our hotel) and found this bike route map across the road.

This chapel in Welldorf was built in 1887 and restored from 2009-2011.
We reached Julich at 1400 and stopped for lunch #2 at a gas station bistro. The grilled tuna tandori sandwich was delicious. We did beat the rain.
Our hotel has a mini-museum about energy with a timeline from 300 BC to the present. There are several hands-on exhibits targeted for kids. This one is about the energy generated by out hearts. The whole hotel seemed geared to families since it was next door to an amusement park.
