September 2 - Castle Deja Vu

Wednesday - Mainz to Oberwesel
The bikes had a pretty cushy spot to stay last night.
Four years ago we only passed through Mainz on the waterfront so we did a little sightseeing on our way out of town.
Even though we did the Rhine route before, we have decided that this section is worth seeing again and it gets us farther north a little quicker than some other routes would so we can spend some time in Belgium. Hard to believe it is already September and we only have 2 weeks left.

Ironically, Donna's bike gloves failed again just in time to visit the Franz XXL Bike Shop. We stopped here 4 years ago for the same reason. It hasn't gotten any smaller! The big change is that they have electric bikes now. We've seen quite a few people on electric bikes in our travels so far.
Nothing subtle about this bike seat!
In Budenheim for lunch. Bon Appetit has become a universal phrase so we aren't sure it is really French anymore.
Just a beautiful day for riding in a beautiful place.

The Chief Mechanic always cringes when we have to ride on dirt.
This bridge was built in 1913 and was destroyed in 1945. It has not been replaced. Ferries are now used to cross this section of the Rhine, from Mainz to Koblenz. We have entered the Middle Rhine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Better than average graffitti.
You can take the high road and I can take the low road.....or vice versa. This was some heavy-duty infrastructure to keep everybody moving. There are tunnels underneath this road to allow traffic to cross from the town to the river without dealing with the through traffic. Bikes take the right hand path if they want to cross under the road, the left hand path if you are just passing through.
River kilometers from the North Sea.
Hey......we've been over this line before! Or have we? We think this marker is new.
What we've also realized is that we had a couple of rainy days last time and we missed a lot in the mist and being focused on getting to a dry place.
Brigette and Smiley. Donna and Smiley first met at the 50 degree marker. This time all of us chatted for a bit. They are from north of Hamburg. Doug took a step back to be out of the picture and it turned out to be a LONG step down the riverbank. Some bushes cushioned most of the slow motion tumble. We were all laughing so hard we could barely help Doug get upright (or get a picture of the sight). Nor shall we show you a picture of the resulting grapefruit-sized bruise since this is a G-rated blog.

Passing by Bacharach, a town we stayed in last time.
The Customs house looks like it got a paint job recently.
These people are having just way too much fun!

Strange place to take a nap......
........but not to take this picture.
Our home for the night in Oberwesel. Another reason this is different than 4 years ago is we are spending the night is different towns this time. The afternoon was so pleasant and the light so wonderful that we just stowed our bikes and gear, grabbed the cameras and headed back out on foot.
We only saw the east side of this wall the last time. It was hiding all sorts of interesting sights.

Mutter Rosa Kapelle

The view from our hotel room..........we are really glad we decided to give the Middle Rhine a second chance to WOW us.
