Day 24 - Agriculture 101

Day 24 - Sanger to Visalia
When the tracks and the road are at diagonals is the trickiest type of railroad crossing. It's nice when it is nice and smooth like this one.

They are serious when they say they are in the middle of "The World's Fruit Basket".
Doug once again chooses a very handy spot to get our very first flat tire of the trip. Actually it wasn't flat until after he had his coffee. Grass and shade was a nice touch. Made it 930 miles and he gets one on the next to last day!
The other nice thing was it gave us a chance to talk to Abraham and his father Jose'. They had some very thoughtful questions. One was why we were doing this. One of the reasons is because we get to talk to people like them!
A speed calming device for the bike trail? These were on each side of the intersection with a road. It is the first time we've seen this configuration. They also had good signing at the crossings.
A mystery vine.
Right behind those hills are the Sierra Nevada Mountains. There is so much harvesting and tilling going on right now that the air is pretty dusty so you will just have to believe us.
The oranges are definitely NOT ripe yet.

Baby orchard. Many young orchards in the area had to be replanted this year because of a hard freeze last winter.
What looked like grapevines from a distance is actually kiwis!
This is the driveway to sister Leslie's house. She and husband Ted live in the middle of an orange grove and we LOVE their oranges, especially in the middle of an Oregon winter.
We get our own private Bed and Breakfast tonight. And it includes a delicious BBQ chicken dinner too! Watched the Giants lose to the Cardinals in the 9th inning. Sigh.
