Sept. 9 - Playing dwarf among the giants

Burlington Campground to Richardson Grove State Park Campground
Thursday - September 9
This our improvised squirrel latch.......don't think it would keep out anything bigger!
Those are springboard holes used to hold planks that the sawyer could stand on while cutting down the tree. There were quite a few of these tall stumps all through the campground.
We decided to go back north 4 miles to the Founder's Tree Grove to do some big tree sightseeing. The road back seemed a lot flatter than it did last night when we were tired.

This is the fallen Dyersville Giant.

We got back to the campground about 10:15 and went down to the river to investigate the temporary summer bridge that leads to trails on the other side. It is a weird feeling to be on such a light bridge with that much water rushing under you.
Looking south along the Eel River. We will cross this river several times by the end of the day. We finally started heading south about 11:00. We arrived in Myer's Flat to find that the market was the only place to get lunch but their sandwiches were top notch. Doug tried to get coffee at the little shop next door but the clerk was so rude he left without any. The guy must have been having a really bad day. The day got a bit warmer by the time we reached Miranda, enough that we took off our long stuff and had to put on sunscreen! Our next stop was in Garberville where we made copies of the guidebook maps for the route from here to San Francisco and bought groceries for dinner and breakfast.

If you want an animated movie character they have it here!
This is Daniel, our hiker/biker site mate. He lived in Guatamala and Brazil for 4 years and had just recently returned to the US. He makes jewelry that he sells at festivals and craft fairs, traveling only by bicycle. And he had earrings! Donna bought a pair of jade ones so now her ears won't have to be naked the rest of the trip.

Today's miles = 40.4
Total miles = 190
