Sept. 8 - It IS the Coast after all

Wednesday - September 8
We are back at Los Bagels for breakfast.

We followed part of the Auto Tour route out of town which passed by many of these well-cared for Victorian-style houses.

Our luck held as it started raining just before this overpass........the only shelter in miles......so we could put on our raingear in relative dryness. It only rained for about a half hour after we got back on the road.

Still in the rain gear

Great shoulder on this bridge.

And here is the Eel River itself.

Scotia - This is the Wi'ne'ma Theatre which was built in 1919 and named for a young Indian girl who devoted her life to establishing friendly relations between her people, the Modoc Indians, and the white men. The first performance was on November 20, 1920 and told the story of Wi'ne'ma. The theater was renovated in 2002.

This is the outside exhibit of the Scotia Logging Museum. It was closed for the day but this old steam donkey was pretty  interesting.
Looks like potential shelter!
This  block is about 4 feet tall and was at the other end of the cable that came from the steam donkey to pull the logs out of the woods. A flower bed is not its natural habitat.

This Pacific Lumber Company redwood mill went on for about a mile.
Graffiti comment - don't normally condone it  but somehow seemed appropriate in this instance.   : )

What a welcome sight. Now we get to leave the hustle and bustle of Highway 101.......
......and enter a whole different world and pace of life......with carpets of oxalis and sword fern.
Tiny landscapes amongst the giants.

Donna could hear the fresh corn calling from this roadside stand in Pepperwood.

It had been such a late season that they had just started harvesting the corn.

A memorial to a person that liked corn on the cob almost as much as Donna.

Looks like we are headed the right direction........only 239 miles to go!

Redwood "fairy ring" sprouting from a large stump.
These trees create a deep shade even in the middle of the day........good thing there's  lots of reflective stuff. The video below will give you a feel for traveling amongst these wonderful trees.

Hiker/biker spot in the Burlington Campground in Humboldt Redwoods State Park. We had spent so much time taking in the sights along the way that it was after 7 when we arrived.
Gets dark a lot earlier under these trees too.
Gourmet camp chef hard at work.
Yummmm!!!!!
Today's miles = 52.4
Total miles  = 149.3
