Europe 2018 - June 23 - Notre Dame, Arc de Triomphe, Eiffel Tower

Saturday - June 23
This will be a day for visiting iconic Paris landmarks. We started with Notre Dame. It is so sad to think about the fire in this beautiful church. We attended a mass in one of the small chapels here in 2011 and the simple beauty and power of that mass remains one of our favorite memories of Paris.

Joan of Arc

Notre Dame is such an international church in so many ways.

We did notice a bit more modern things too and a bit more security than in 2011.
The scaffolding for the renovation is already in place in the background. We are so glad that we were able to visit with Megan and Lori before that fateful fire.
We don't have quite the same hair color as the women in the photograph but Doug is hanging out with 3 women for the next few weeks so this seemed like the perfect spot to take a break. There was some kind of event causing road closures in the area so we took the Metro the 3+ miles to the Arc de Triomphe.
It was delightful summer Saturday so there were lots of tourists out and about.

We took an extended lunch break to watch part of the Belgium - Tunisia World Cup soccer game. It was really fun watching the French patrons reactions to the game. Belgium won 5-2.
Afterwards, we walked down Avenue Kleber towards the Eiffel Tower. You know you are getting closer when the little statues start lining the street.

The Jardins du Trocadero is a great place to do some people-watching.

The tower looks really close from here but it is actually across the Seine River.

Another sign of the times. They were adding a security wall around the base of the tower so we could not just walk under it like we did in 2011. The surrounding lawns and the Peace Pillars were also inaccessible.....such a disappointing development.
It was a good thing that we fortified ourselves with some ice cream as the trip home was full of detours. Turns out there was big Dior fashion event and a 2024 Olympics promotional event happening along our route, just an average day in Paris.
