Canada 2019 - Day 15 - Dunnville to Fort Erie

July 31 - Wednesday
Dunnville to Fort Erie
We say goodby to Lake Erie
We have seen so many of these blue flowers along the roadside that Donna finally could not resist taking a picture.

It has to turn somewhere out there! Notice the long sleeves....it has actually been a little cool this morning.
And the road turned at Lowbanks.

The beach in Long Beach.....Ontario, not California
Our lunch stop, The Canalside, in Port Colburne, the southern end of the Welland Canal. This canal is how ships get past Niagara Falls.
While we were eating lunch, the bridge went up,
a ship went through,
and it went back down just as we finished eating. Notice those huge counterweights.
Metal grating always makes for a odd feeling ride.
This trail started right on the other side of the bridge and took us all the way to Fort Erie.
Nice way to phrase the trail user priorities.

Time to pump up the tires...and take a break at this handy bench.

This ultra-modern style house would have stood out from all the more traditional style houses surrounding it anyway but the "birdsnest" took the cake.
Good bye Lake Erie.....
......and hello Niagara River. That is Buffalo, New York on the distant shore. We went through there on our 2007 cross country bike tour but chose not to take in Niagara Falls at that time. It has only taken us 12 years to finally fix that omission.
Old Fort Erie and the very helpful guard.

More Buffalo skyline.
The Peace Bridge
We are definitely staying on the Canada side.

Canada 2019 - Day 14 - Dunnville Thunderstorm Day

July 30 - Dunnville
This is why we decided to stay in place today.
Headed to breakfast.
It wasn't raining at lunch time so we headed downtown on the bikes. Someone had put dye in the fountain last night.
Flyers Cafe was a nice place to hang out for awhile.
Just the smell of the place made us hungry.
The art work was done by local children. One woman walking by pointed out the tile that her son made when he was 5 years old.

The local horticulture group has done a fine job with these planters.
An old style post office. Most postal services are found in drug or grocery stores these days.
We looked for more mayflies but they were all gone this evening.

End of week 2 - 455 total miles
Now it looks like we are getting somewhere on the map!

Canada 2019 - Day 13 - Port Dover to Dunnville

July 29 - Monday
Port Dover to Dunnville
The bikes had to be happy in the garage last night.....more like their usual environment at home.
Good by Port Dover.....we had a lovely visit.

This conveyor goes quite a ways out into the lake. It feeds the Lake Erie Works US Steel mill.
The factories in this area must be using a lot of power.
Agriculture still finds a way.
The ESSO Nanticoke Refinery
The wind is doing its part today too. Thankfully, it is a tailwind.
The Sunflower Cafe in Selkirk, built in 1875. Funny how names keep getting repeated!
It was a fine spot for a snack break.
An old house on one side of the road....
.....and new construction on the other side. We have seen a lot of new houses being built in the past 2 weeks.
Hello Dunnville
Some art to accompany our late lunch at Minga Cafe.
The back side of the aptly named Riverview Motel.
It is almost like camping but we will have a roof over our head.
The mayflies were everywhere!
They don't bite because they have no mouth or digestive system and only live 24 hours.
There is an assisted living center right behind the playground.
This is the town's mascot, the Mudcat. We visited him during our after-dinner walk.
Catching up little by little.
