August 18: Elk Grove Village to Chicago

August 18 - This is our sound for the day ... jets overhead. We passed O'Hare Airport about 8:00 and there were planes taking off about every minute but the road traffic around the airport was quite light.

Another sedate midwestern water tower in the town of Rosewood.

One of the neighborhoods that we passed through as we head for the lake. It was very ethnically diverse.

Lawrence Street still heading towards the lake.

This is the Lakefront Trail which runs for 20 miles along Lake Michigan, most of the length of Chicage proper.
Taking in the sights.

There were several marinas and LOTS of boats

Little did we know that today was the first day of the Air Show.

And half of Chicago was packed in a 5 mile section of the lake front! This is just the beginning.

We had quite the audience as we made our very slow way through the sea of humanity that was staring at the sky most of the time.

These 2 pilots were amazing to watch and since they were not flying jets you could see them really well all the time.

Moving on, miles to go, thousands of Chicagoans to pass by still.

Navy Pier

Buckingham Fountain

One of the sports arenas (Soldier Field?) ... a very odd mixture of architectural elements.

Made it through to a much quieter part.

Just part of the downtown Chicago skyline.

The 31st Street Beach where we stopped to have lunch. This women came up with a pedal that had fallen off. Doug had all the needed tools and got her bike functional again. We chatted for quite awhile afterwards.

Met William and his grandson Julian while we were finishing our lunch. They were enjoying a day together on the Lake Front like so many other Chicagoans.

Consulting our handy Chicago Bike Map. It was almost in shreds by the time we got through the city. This is the Museum of Science and Industry.

At the south end of the Lakefront Trail. We are really glad that we did not skip by Chicago as many people suggested that we do. We had a wonderful time. It will take a return trip to really do the city justice.

Entering Indiana. There wasn't a sign but we had passed under the freeway so we knew we had to be there. Figured the casino sign was the next best thing. It had started raining about 30 minutes earlier and we weren't quite sure where the motel was. We waited out the torrential part in a convenience store where we had stopped to ask directions.
